Climbing Scarfell Pike from Wasdale is the steepest route, but the shortest route, for a gentler gradient try it from Borrowdale but as a drawback the route is longer. I have done this carrying 30KG Backpack and a 5kg camera bag. Tony the Retired Hiker in Essex

Moral of the story: it is not safe to drive on any roadway with a police vehicle in close proximity. At your earliest opportunity, pull to the side of the roadway and in a legal and lawful manner park your vehicle for a period of at least several minutes. This will allow the police vehicle to safely depart from your proximity and target another unsuspecting motorist.
